changed tack from wearing blows to all-out
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Claressa Shields got the Olympic rings tattooed on her powerful right bicep five weeks ago. Rio and London are inscribed within the bottom two loops. On top, the American middleweight added a simple, confident declaration: 2X.When I win my second Olympic gold medal, Im going to put `Au right here, Shields said, pointing to the special spot. Because `Au on the periodic table stands for gold. Im always going to keep this as `Two times, but if I go to Tokyo, Im going to put Tokyo right here in the middle. And if I go to another one, Ill put another city over here.Four years after Shields unexpectedly dominated the first Olympic womens boxing tournament, she is taking confident steps toward a tantalizing future. The teenager who overcame a childhood of poverty and abuse to win gold in London is now an independent 21-year-old woman and a favorite to become the first two-time American Olympic boxing medalist. She boldly moved out of her native Flint, Michigan, and into the Olympic Training Center last year, narrowing her focus on her historic task in Brazil.Shields hasnt lost a fight since London, winning two world championships and a Pan-Am Games title between Olympics. The youngest boxer in the 2012 games is now older than all of the U.S. boxing teams six men, who look up to their nations only gold medalist since 2004.Im around her a lot, and I dont think the pressure gets her, said U.S. bantamweight Shakur Stevenson, likely the Americans top medal hope among men. Claressa is like super-confident. It doesnt seem like anything ever gets into her head. She feels like shes the best at boxing, like theres nobody better than her. So she fights every time like, `OK, Im about to go in there and Im about to whoop this girl. I love her attitude.Shields was 17 years old in London, but she only seemed precocious to those who didnt know her. Shields had to grow up well before she ever reached the Olympics, which she approached with a determination formed by necessity.Shields remarkable rise has been chronicled in print, on television and in a documentary film. Her mother struggled with addiction and her father spent time in prison, but she found her purpose and gift in the boxing gym six years before she won in London.Gold didnt really change Shields life. She had already transformed it herself.Im glad I won an Olympic gold medal, Shields said. I trained hard for it. But now the goal is to win another Olympic gold medal, so the first one Ive already got, thats in the past. I look at my gold medal, and I think, `Oh, I was 17 when I did it. Thats awesome. Thats great. And it is, but I cant really think too deep about it. Ive got to think about whats ahead of me.Shields said she is more focused and much happier since moving away from Flint. She spent the past year living among friends and eating for free in Colorado Springs, where top training and medical care are easily available.Even after Shields run in London, endorsement deals and wealth didnt immediately follow. She was disappointed, but not surprised -- and she simply went back to work in the gym, making her achievements impossible to ignore. Her corporate tie-ins now include multiple sports-related companies, an auto manufacturer and a film rights deal with Universal. She doesnt even have to mention her gorgeous custom-made Under Armour boxing boots, with her initials and Never let them see you sweat embroidered on the tongue.Despite the enormous demands on her time as the greatest fighter in one of the most eye-catching amateur sports, Shields assertively balances her pursuits of fame and fortune with her athletic needs. After going to the ESPYs (last month), it was great, but I was like, `Back to training, Shields said. I ran 4 miles that night. I ran 3 1/2 miles the next morning. I sparred 10 rounds nonstop. Its like Im back in my groove and Ive got the motivation that I needed for the tournament. It always comes when I need it.Shes still chasing one particular endorsement, however.Hopefully I get on a Wheaties box, Shields said. Thats my ultimate goal. Or they can put me on Frosted Flakes, I dont care. I need to be on some kind of cereal box.Shields has been an enormous boon for USA Boxing, which didnt have a mens medalist in London. Her success -- and the rising popularity of womens boxing in general -- allowed USA Boxing to get the funds to hire veteran Irish amateur coach Billy Walsh, who oversees the entire team from his official position as the womens head coach.Walsh only got the job late last year, and his true focus is on the 2020 Olympics as he attempts to build a cohesive program. He still became a fervent backer of Shields, lauding her example to his other seven fighters.None of these guys understood what I was trying to build with Team USA when I got here, Walsh said. Claressa is the only one that caught on. It was massive. She said, `Youre trying to build a team. Exactly. Were trying to build a bond, and she sees it better than anyone. The middleweight tournament doesnt begin until the second Sunday of the Olympics, so Shields has plenty of time to cheer on her teammates before getting back in the ring for her singular run at a second gold.Ive never followed anybody, Shields said. I really didnt like listening to anybody or taking instructions. I was open-minded to learn new things, but Ive always been my own boss and did what I wanted to do, despite what anybody wanted to say. Ive never been a people-pleaser, and I think thats kind of one of my benefits. Black Friday Cavaliers Jerseys . LeBron James and Chris Bosh didnt need any more. Cyber Monday Cavaliers Jerseys .B. - Sebastien Auger made 44 saves as the Saint John Sea Dogs edged the visiting Acadie-Bathurst Titan 2-1 on Saturday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action. Womens Cavaliers Jerseys . - Goaltender Philippe Desrosiers of the Rimouski Oceanic has broken a shutout record that was only three months old in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. South Africa 481 for 8 dec and 105 for 6 (de Kock 50, Southee 2-27, Boult 2-38) lead New Zealand 214 (Williamson 77, Rabada 3-62, Steyn 3-66) by 372 runs Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsSouth Africa gained control of the second Test in Centurion after their seamers made light work of New Zealands middle and lower order to bowl them out for 214. On a 13-wicket third day at SuperSport Park, South Africas lead ballooned to 372 despite New Zealands quicks scything through their top order to leave them 105 for 6 at stumps.Kane Williamsons diligent work ethic helped weather a testing period in the morning, but regular breakthroughs meant South Africa ripped through New Zealands largely untested middle order, and took a first-innings lead of 267.Having chosen not to enforce the follow-on, South Africa began their second innings in sprightly fashion after an early tea, with Quinton de Kock hitting five fours and a six off the first 11 balls he faced. But Trent Boult and Tim Southee utilised appreciable lateral movement to nip out three wickets in two overs: Stephen Cook lbw after being pinned in the crease to a Boult inswinger, Hashim Amla caught at second slip off Southee, and JP Duminy playing around his front pad. After five overs, South Africa were 32 for 3.Just like in the first innings, New Zealand persisted by bowling short at de Kock, but he didnt shy away from pulling. He made use of any width on offer and brought up his second fifty of the Test, off 42 balls. But an unplayable bouncer from Doug Bracewell, jagging into the left-hander from around the wicket and rearing towards his head, caused him to glove a catch to gully. By then, though, South Africa were 349 ahead. It looked like Temba Bavuma and Stiaan van Zyl would play out the overs remaining till stumps, but just when they seemed set to achieve that objective, Wagner produced a lovely delivery in the channel outside off to have van Zyl caught behind. In the morning, Williamson displayed exemplary technique - head over the ball, soft hands at point of contact and bat near pad - to quell Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander, all of whhom got the ball to move both ways through the day.dddddddddddd Williamson repeatedly left deliveries on a testing line outside off stump, forcing the quicks straighter and then picking them off through midwicket - his modus operandi for most of his innings. He scored 77, his first Test fifty in South Africa. At the other end, South Africa peppered Henry Nicholls with short balls. Despite looking awkward while fending or avoiding the bouncers, Nicholls seemed largely untroubled against the ensuing full deliveries until he missed a drive off Rabada. Umpire Paul Reiffel adjudged Nicholls to be not out but on review, Hawkeye indicated that the ball had pitched in line and would have hit middle stump. The short-pitched plans continued after Nicholls dismissal with a leg gully and short leg in place. Williamson and BJ Watling, two of New Zealands better-equipped batsmen to tackle the bouncer, ducked or swayed out of the line.Steyn persevered and reaped reward when he had Watling fending off his ribs, the ball grazing his glove on the way to wicketkeeper de Kock. A thin spike on the Snickometer resulted in South Africas second wicket of the day, via their second successful review. With Mitchell Santner inside-edging Philander onto his stumps shortly before lunch, and Bracewell and Southee falling within six overs of each other after the break, New Zealand were 169 for 8.Rabada, regularly clocking 150 kph, discomfited Wagner with a series of bouncers, one of which took the edge of his bat and lobbed to second slip via his shoulder. However, replays indicated Rabada had overstepped. Thereafter, Wagner changed tack from wearing blows to all-out attack, and heaved three fours and a six in the space of five Steyn deliveries to hurry New Zealand past 200.He kept playing the pull, and eventually, one took his leading edge on the way to de Kock and Steyn duly directed Wagner back to the dressing room. Williamson was last man out in the next over, top-edging a pull just as Wagner had done.
